Pascal College in a Nutshell

Pascal College within the Amarantis Organisation

Introduction

Since 1 January, 2007, the Pascal College in Zaandam has been part of the Amarantis Organisation for Education, which united the former ISA schools (vmbo, havo, vwo), the ROC ASA schools (mbo) and the SIVOA schools in Almere.
With its 3,000 employees, 13,000 students in secondary education and 17,000 in MBO education, the Amarantis Organisation provides the basis for 55 schools and 200 courses of study in the provinces of Northern Holland, Utrecht and Flevoland.
Each school has its own identity and is its own small world. Each presents itself to the public and communicates under its own name.

More Than Just an Education

The Amarantis Organisation for Education is all about connecting people, hence the ‘plus’ mark in our emblem. We share our Christian view on life as well as our mission to be innovative and to offer our students more than just an education that is aimed at a professional career.
We want to help (young) people to find their place in society through education that invites participation. In our philosophy of education, attending to each student’s personal development and role within the social community is of the utmost importance: social awareness is our aim! We also want to encourage emancipation, diversity and dialogue between people from different religious, humanistic and cultural backgrounds. Everyone is welcomed at our schools, regardless of their religion, sexual preference or cultural background.

Identity

The Amarantis Organisation has adopted the Christian educational tradition as the basis for education for all their schools and the Pascal College is no exception. We expect all of our students as well as our staff to respect our Christian heritage, just as we respect and welcome students and their parents who adhere to a different (religious) view on life. The school’s vision is formulated in such a way that all concerned may recognise themselves in it. Hence, the subject of “World Religion and Life-Philosophy” is a natural part of our curriculum.

Principles

The Amarantis Organisation (and thus Pascal College) has formulated its mission in the explanatory statement, “Education with a Character,” a document defining the character of all of its schools as one based on communication and dialogue between students and their teachers. This interaction should ideally be conducted according to the following principles:
  1. Humanity: Our mission is to work for our students as individual human beings, according to the belief that each of them is unique. Each is an indivisible unity and therefore each should be made to feel that he or she really counts! As humans, all of us are equal before the law and before God.
  2. Tolerance: We are open to everyone’s thoughts, attitudes and feelings about life, whether they be rich or poor, black or white, man or woman, young or old, hetero- or homosexual, Muslim or Christian, or whatever else. Our differences become the basis for dialogue as we try to understand our own motivation in life and that of others.
  3. Stewardship: We aspire to be an organisation that stimulates people to work for a better educational and social climate, where justice and sustainability prevail and talent and resources are nourished.
  4. Service: We aim to provide education that promotes professionality and stimulates our students to become citizens who care about their society and the world.
  5. Integrity: We strive to pratice what we preach in all aspects of our work!
Our Board of Directors and all members of our Organisation continually try to ensure the realisation of these principles.

The Pascal College Mission

Our Organisation is commited to the Christian message of faith, hope and love, which we express through our five Principles of Humanity, Tolerance, Stewardship, Service and Integrity. As educators, and as rolemodels, we are also responsible for keeping this promise!
The students are at the heart of the Pascal College! Our teachers know their students and both can benefit from learning together and helping each other in an atmosphere of mutual cooperation, something that we see as both natural and extremely important.
Our personnel contribute professionally in helping teens and young adults form their lives in a meaningful way, while dealing openly with any of their questions.
We are very conscious of the fact that no man is an island, since all of our acts have social and moral consequences attached to them. After all, we as humans are part of society and we also need each other.
Our staff and students therefore feel responsible for each other and for their environment, which helps create a safe climate for learning and socialising. Respect, social commitment and the care for a sustainable environment for learning, all have our continuous attention!
Pascal College aims to provide education of a highly qualitative standard for Gymnasium, Atheneum and Havo. We choose to focus on high achievement, while also complying to the national guidelines for graduation within the set limits of time.
We also try to give our students ample opportunity for developing their own talents.

The Characteristics of our Educational Philosophy

  • We take individual differences into account and work to offer our students the instructions they need, knowing that “the avarage student” does not exist. Each student has his or her own ways of learning, his or her own talents to offer.
  • We provide a solid education for developing knowledge and learning skills, motivating our students to aim for above-avarage achievement. The school and its teachers decide on the study material that will be used and then select the most suitable way of teaching it.
  • We stimulate our students’ curiosity by offering them a variety of work-forms and assignments that will invite and inspire them to look into a subject more deeply, thereby helping them to disocver and develop talents they may not yet know they possess.
  • We prepare our students to become self-assured, socially capable and morally responsible members of our society. We want them to develop a good sense of social and international awareness, and to be fully equipped when finishing their education with us to work either independently or as members of a team. Whichever proves to be the case, we want them to be able to deliver results!
  • We are a lively, energetic school, as our diverse sporting activities and social, creative, multicultural and international activities can testify!
